Welp, I decided I needed an avatar for my socials. I was originally going to use my [[faces]] and update it daily... buuuut that's too much work.
So, now we have this wolf dude. He doesn't have a name... I guess he's me? I don't know.
I'm not sure where I plan on going with these type of "art" blog posts. Documenting my learning progress I suppose. Maybe it will be helpful to other artists out there.
Anyway, created in [Procreate](https://procreate.com/) on an **iPad Air 4th gen** in **10 hours and 55 minutes**. **4096px by 4096px canvas at 300 DPI.** Brushes used:
Initial Sketch: HB Pencil (Sketching)
Line art: Peppermint (Sketching)
Flat color: Technical Pen (Inking), Studio Pen (Inking)
Gradient coloring: Round Brush (Painting), Soft Brush (Airbrushing)
Due to the canvas size I was only able to get **28** layers, and I ran out a few times. I could also feel my iPad getting warm, and it even crashed at one point. Strokes were also a little laggy. I was definitely pushing my hardware to its limit.
11 hours is a bit long for a painting like this. I need to get that drawing time lower. Practice practice practice!
I used a couple of reference photos, but mostly just to lay down a basic sketch. I always try to use references from free stock image sites just to avoid any potential copyright issues. Primary reference was this photo by [Aksinia Avelur on Pexels](https://www.pexels.com/photo/brown-wolf-on-green-grass-field-8583473/):

I also had a strange situation with this one. Frequently if I need inspiration or just a super quick reference of something I will search a term in Google Images. It's quick, and often I only need it for a few seconds.
This time though I noticed that some of the images in my searches were AI generated, and this creates an interesting predicament as an artist.
I suppose for inspiration AI art can work fine, but for any type of reference I feel like it can't be trusted. How do you know that the lighting, colors, or anatomy are correct? I guess if you're studying someone's art you have similar issues... but still. I eventually started adding "-ai" to my searches to thin out any AI images as it just felt wrong to reference them for an original piece.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the read. Peace.
